konsular_hilfe Enlarge image (© AA) The Legal and Consular Section is the passport office for German citizens residing in the 13 federal states within the administrative district of the Consulate General in Chicago. US citizens as well as third country nationals can obtain visas for travels to and through Germany. In addition, Consul Franz Kaufmann and his team provide a wide range of legal services.

Please understand that due to the vast amount of emails the Legal Department can only answer inquiries to which the answers cannot be found on Therefore, you are kindly requested to read the information provided.


An appointment is necessary for the processing of most legal and consular matters at the Consulate General in Chicago. To make an appointment, please use our appointment system.

Pension and compensation issues can still be processed from Monday through Friday between 9:00 and 11:30 a.m. without setting up an appointment in advance.

Please note: Due to space restrictions, it is only possible for people to enter the Consulate General if their personal presence is necessary for the application. We also ask that you do not bring any luggage or other bulky objects with you to your appointment, as it is not possible for these to be stored.

Telephone consulatation for passport and visa matters is offered Monday and Wednesday from 1:30 - 3:00 pm. Phone calls regarding these matters cannot be accepted at other times.
