The Ambassador met with the Chairman of the parliamentary group of Alliance ’90/The Greens in the German Bundestag Jürgen Trittin and hosted a luncheon in his honor on transatlantic economic and trade issues at his residence.
In the presence of German American Business Council (GABC) Chairman Steve Williams and President Lynn Taylor, the Ambassador presented the GABC’s annual leadership award to acting Secretary of Commerce Dr. Rebecca Blank during the traditional “Maifest” of the GABC. One of the key findings of the summit was that German-style workforce training, which is based on the dual principle of work and learning, can help fill the skills gap that employers face in the Charlotte region, as well as in other parts of the US. In his speech, the Ambassador outlined the German Embassy’s Skills Initiative, which is aimed at enhancing skills training in the Charlotte region and beyond.

In Iowa, the ambassadors also met with Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds and the president of the World Food Prize Foundation, Kenneth Quinn. The ambassadors gave a joint interview with Iowa Public Radio and paid a visit to Pioneer Hi-Bred International headquarters.
Upon invitation of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, ambassadors Delattre and Ammon then traveled to Chicago, where they delivered keynote remarks on the Franco-German partnership and the future of Europe.

Over the course of the conference, the Ambassador attended, among other gatherings, a luncheon hosted by the Federation of German Industries, with Vice President Biden as guest of honor; a dinner hosted by Minister-President Horst Seehofer of the Free State of Bavaria; and a dinner hosted by the secretary general of the Munich Conference, Wolfgang Ischinger, in honor of former Member of Congress Jane Harman.
The Ambassador also took part in a ceremony during which German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle presented the Knight Commander’s Cross (Badge and Star) of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany to former Senator Sam Nunn in recognition of his efforts to foster German-American relations and his work in the field of nuclear threat reduction. The event was part of the Embassy’s German-American Dialogue series.

The Ambassador was elected as a member of the council of the Youth for Understanding Foundation at its annual joint meeting with the board of directors of the Foundation in New York. Since 1990, the Youth for Understanding Foundation has been promoting transatlantic understanding by giving students from the eastern states of Germany scholarships to live and study for a year in the United States as well as to American minority high school students to spend a year in Germany.

The Ambassador traveled to Columbus, where he met with Governor John Kasich of Ohio, 13 CEOs of German-owned companies invested in Ohio, and representatives of Ohio community colleges to discuss the crucial topic of workforce training and education. All the participants agreed on the urgent need to close the skills gap and affirmed their willingness to enter into a process of closer collaboration between businesses, government, and training providers. The event was part of the Embassy's Skills Initiative, which is aimed at identifying and promoting best practices in sustainable workforce development based on the German dual system of vocational training.
The Ambassador spoke at a gala event in Washington, D.C., to celebrate the merger of the TransAtlantic Business Dialogue and the European American Business Council to form the Transatlantic Business Council. Upon the invitation of Congressmen Dent and Gerlach the Ambassador visited Pennsylvania. In the course of the visit the Ambassador spoke at a roundtable meeting of German Investors in Pennsylvania and had a discussion with students and faculty at a town-hall-style meeting organized by the Science Technology Engineering and Math Academy (STEM) in Downingtown. The Ambassador also attended a working luncheon of the Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center of Kutztown University and visited the city of Bethlehem, where he attended a presentation of the city’s Bach Choir.

With Vice President Joe Biden as special guest, the Ambassador hosted a dinner reception at his residence in honor of outgoing Senator Richard Lugar and his wife Charlene. Among the guests were colleagues, friends and family of Senator Lugar, including Senator Frank Lautenberg, Senator Bob Corker, Senator Jeanne Shaheen, former Senator Sam Nunn, General Brent Scowcroft and other dignitaries. In his dinner speech, the Ambassador paid tribute to Senator Lugar’s many achievements over his 36-year political career.

Ambassador Ammon met with the representatives of the German political foundations in Washington D.C. The representatives briefed him on their working agendas for 2013.
The Ambassador delivered a speech on transatlantic relations at the School of International Service of the American University in Washington, DC, as part of the “Think Transatlantic Campus Weeks” initiated by the German Information Center. Ambassador Ammon met with the Minister of Finance of the German State of North Rhine-Westphalia , Dr. Norbert Walter-Borjans, and his delegation. They discussed the situation in the US after the elections and issues pertaining to the global financial crisis.

The Ambassador delivered a keynote address on "Germany's role in the Transatlantic Relationship" at an event organized by the European Institute. In his remarks the Ambassador elaborated on current and future challenges and prospects for Germany, Europe and the transatlantic relations including the ongoing sovereign debt crisis in the eurozone, the idea of a more integrated transatlantic market place as well as thoughts on the future of the European Union.
The Ambassador met with the Jackson Janes, president of the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies (AICGS) at Johns Hopkins University, to discuss further cooperation.

The Ambassador had lunch with Richard W. Fisher, president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, to discuss the economic and financial situation in the US and Europe.
Later on that day the Ambassador met with Hans Christoph Atzpodien, CEO Business Area Marine Systems of German manufacturer ThyssenKrupp AG, and Andreas Burmester, CEO of Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft GmbH.
The Ambassador also met with Cornelia Rogall-Grothe, the Federal Government Commissioner for Information Technology and State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry of the Interior. Ms. Rogall-Grothe was to give a keynote speech at the 2012 Symantec Government Symposium the following day, which honors the 2012 Cyber Award winners.

The Ambassador welcomed a delegation of the German Bundestag and the President of Humboldt University of Berlin under the chairmanship of Bundestag Member Dagmar Freitag. The purpose of the delegation’s visit to Washington was to interview and select candidates for next year’s scholarship program of the German Bundestag, the International Parliamentary Scholarships (IPS).

In the evening, the Ambassador briefed a delegation of politicians and officials from several German states on the current state of play in the US elections. The delegation’s visit was organized by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.

On November 1, Ambassador Ammon traveled to Ohio to take part in a study trip ahead of the US elections organized by Global Bridges (Berlin) as part of a high-ranking delegation. In Ohio, the Ambassador had a chance to meet with Governor Mitt Romney and former President Bill Clinton. Over the course of three days, the delegation also met with US Senators Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman, US Representative Marcy Kaptur, state Senator Teresa Fedor and local officials.

In the presence of Dr. Henry Kissinger and Dr. John Hamre, the Ambassador openend the German American dialogue on China in his residence, co-hosted by the German Embassy and the Center for Strategic and International Studies. This one-day conference brought together high-ranking representatives of the US and German administration, think tanks, civil society, private businesses and members of Parliament to engage in a strategic discussion on China.

Upon invitation of Dr. Henry Kissinger, the Ambassador participated in a Counselors Meeting of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), where he also spoke on a panel on the future of Europe.
In the evening the Ambassador delivered a speech at the celebration of the 25th anniversary of German American Day hosted by the German-American Heritage Foundation of the USA. In his speech the Ambassador paid tribute to the many achievements and contributions of German-Americans to the history of the United States.

The Ambassador followed an invitation of the Atlantik Brücke to participate in a breakfast discussion with Henry Kissinger on a whole set of global issues.
Later that day, the Ambassador welcomed Roland Schmidt, secretary general of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, as well as Alexander Kallweit, head of the division for international dialogue at the foundation.
That afternoon Ambassador Ammon met with Professor Matthias Kleiner, current president of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, and Professor Peter Strohschneider, its president-elect. The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation) is the central organizational body of scientific institutions in Germany.

In the morning, the Ambassador met with Deputy Secretary of State Bill Burns.
The Ambassador welcomed more than 2,000 guests to his residence to celebrate the Day of German Unity in the presence of US Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner. From 6 p.m. until midnight the crowd celebrated with German food and drink, took in the sights and sounds of the beautifully adorned garden at the Ambassador’s Residence and heard two German bands, Höhner and Artig, play live music.

The Ambassador embarked on a trip to Portland and Salt Lake City.
In Portland, the Ambassador attended the inauguration of the new German Honorary Consul, Mr. Robert Manicke, and met with Governor John Kitzhaber and Mayor Sam Adams. He also paid a visit to the German American School of Portland.
In Salt Lake City the Ambassador had a number of meetings, including with Governor Gary R. Herbert as well as with leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He also delivered a speech on “The US and Germany: Meeting Global Challenges of the 21st Century.”
The Ambassador also held a lecture on German-US relations at the Hinckley Institute of Politics of the University of Utah. A luncheon hosted by the Salt Lake City Chamber of Commerce, the State of Utah International Trade and Diplomacy Office and the World Trade Center of Utah concluded his visit.

The Ambassador gave a key note address on “Key Challenges in German-American Economic and Business Relations” at the international management meeting of the German company Rohde & Schwarz in Washington, D.C.

Upon invitation of the Chairwoman of the Foreign Relations Committee, Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, the Ambassador participated in a roundtable discussion on Iran issues at the US House of Representatives.
On Friday afternoon, the Ambassador traveled to New York, where on Saturday he would attend the annual German-American Steuben Parade on Fifth Avenue, of which Mayor Michael Bloomberg was a grand marshal and which kicked off a month of German-American festivities in the city. On Friday evening, the Ambassador attended the Stueben Parade Gala, held aboard the “Hornblower Infinity,” and delivered a speech paying tribute to the long and rich history of German culture in the United States.

Governor Cawley for a lunch discussion on relations between the state of Pennsylvania and Germany and to lay the groundwork for enhancing further cooperation, most prominently in the realm of the Skills Initiative.

Ambassador Ammon boarded the German frigate Hessen in the middle of the Chesepeake Bay to accompany the ship on its path to the Baltimore harbor. From June 3 to June 11 Ambassador Ammon visited the State of Alaska and obtained a thorough impression on the State's economy, social pattern and natural beauty. On June 6 he met with Lieutenant Governor Treadwell to discuss the state of the Alaskan economy and potential for in increase in bilateral trade and German investment in Alaska. Ambassador Ammon delivered a speech in front of the Alaska World Affairs Council and the Alaska Export Council focussing on current challenges for global foreign policy. During a reception, he then thanked Honorary Consul Bernd Guetschow for his long-term tenure and introduced the new German Honorary Consul to the State of Alaska, Mr. Michael Jensen.

Ambassador Ammon delivered a speech to a select audience an "Global Challenges for Foreign Policy in 2012" on invitation of the San Francisco Chapter of the American Council on Germany. On March 2 he visited Silicon Valley and had meetings with a series of representatives of high-tech companies in order to get a first hand impression of recent developments in this sector. Among others, Ambassador Ammon drove a new BMW E1-type car and was impressed that it could be refuled using solar energy.
