Welcome to Germany.info, the website of the German Embassy in Washington D.C.
Germans and Americans share a special bond of friendship that reaches way into the past. Countless Americans trace their ancestry back to Germany. We stood together through the bleak days of the Cold War, with millions of American service men and women having served in Germany. Without the unwavering support of the United States we would not have achieved German Unity.
For a decade now, our armed forces have been standing side by side in NATO’s effort to build a stable and peaceful Afghanistan. Our foreign policies complement each other: Preventing nuclear proliferation and promoting disarmament, for example, are priorities we have shared since long.
But we did not only master common challenges in the past. Today we define our common future. In this 21st century, our two countries are facing new challenges of unknown dimensions: Globalization, climate change, and the emergence of new centers of power, for example, will have a strong impact on the economic and security environment, maybe even on our way of life. In today’s world, our two countries must stand together to ensure that our shared values of democracy and freedom will prevail.
We now face testing times for the world’s financial system. Germany and the U.S. share a crucial interest in financial stability, and the German Government, for example, has just recently pledged multi-billion-euro credit guarantees to stabilize the euro zone as one of the core components of the global financial system.
These are just a few examples of how Germany and the U.S. share identical interests and make ideal partners in the new world of the 21st century. We look forward to updating you regularly on this website with in-depth information on German policy – you can also follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
