Visa Appointment Procedure

The Consulate General Atlanta only accepts visa applications from residents of Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

All applications must be submitted in person.

Only applicants who need airport transit visas and spouses of German citizens may apply by mail. However it is not excluded that you might be asked to come to the Consulate for an interview. Mailed visa applications can only be processed if complete. This Consulate General does not assume any liability for the loss of documents submited by mail.

All appointments are exclusively handled by Abtran Ltd. This enables the staff of the visa section to concentrate exclusively on processing visa applications as quickly as possible.To arrange for an appointment, please call:

Opening hours for the appointment service are 8.30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday except for December 24, 25, 26 and 31, New Years Day, Good Friday and Easter Monday. (Note: Some premium numbers (1-900) are blocked by employers and also by some cell phone companies. We suggest that you contact your cell phone company to have the number unblocked. Alternatively, you may call the 1-800 number from most phones and pay via credit card. The telephone numbers above are to be used for appointment making only (no advise on visa requirements can be given). Once you have made an appointment, you will receive an e-mail with your reference number, date and time and visa requirements.

If you have a complaint in regards to the appoinment service Abtran, please email the details of your complaint to: abtran%27%com,Germanyusacustomerservices for a follow up. This e-mail address is specifically for complaints about the appointments only.

Visa applicants without an appointment will have to wait for an open visa officier who might not be available. The Consulate cannot guarantee that you will be seen the same day without an appointment!

Please note that only complete applications can be processed

(make sure to click on "Acceptable Insurance Coverage" below).

The visas cannot be processed on the same day. We will mail your passport and visa back to you with USPS Overnight Express only. Please bring an extra 18 US Dollars for this service, payable in excact cash or money order only. The Consulate cannot use any other courier service. Please do not send in prepaid envelopes of any kind.

You can also pick up your passport in person or have it picked up by a person with an authorization letter, signed by you.

At this time, holders of US travel documents issued as refugee travel documents do not require a visa to travel to Germany for tourism, transit or business if it is still valid 4 months after your retrun. Please note that this regulation applies only to Germany, as other countries of the Schengen agreement may require you to hold a visa. In addition, the rules and regulations may be subject to change, therefore check for changes on this website before each trip. As this exception may not be known to some airlines or immigration officers, we suggest you print this information and take it with you. The printout quotes the address of this website and the date, enabling you and others to verify the information and to check if the printout is up to date.

Holders of US travel documents issued as Permit to Re-enter need a visa according to their nationality (please check visa aplication - visa requirements).
