Here you will find information on schools offering German language instruction as well as a German-speaking family club and playgroup.

German American School Association of Southern California (GASA)

GASA offers German language programs for children ages 4-17 at 10 Saturday School campuses and Kinderland Schools for ages 3-5.  Saturday classes are held 9am-12:00 noon, Sept. - May. The Kinderland Schools offer twice-weekly sessions, morning or afternoon. The Encino school offers Adult conversational German, beginning to intermediate, Saturday mornings, 9am-12 noon.

Benjamin Franklin Elementary School

German Immersion Program at Benjamin Franklin Elementary School

The school offers a K- 6th grade German bilingual/bicultural immersion program as part of the Glendale Unified School district. Students take all required California exams as well as high-level German exams. No previous knowledge of German required.

Goethe International Charter School (GICS)

Goethe International Charter School provides a tuition-free English-German immersion education following the International Baccalaureate curriculum. At present, the school has eight classes from K-4th grade and will add classes as students advance.

Kigala (formerly Kindergarten LA) is a multi-language preschool for children ages 2 to 6 located at the YWCA Santa Monica complex. The preschool currently offers a German and Spanish language immersion program.

The International School of Tucson (IST) offers an internationally-based and internationally-grounded bilingual program of instruction in French/English, German/English and Spanish/English.  IST is open at the Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten levels with full-immersion German, French and Spanish.

The school is a non–profit German preschool licensed by the State of California and serves children ages two to five. The German immersion program includes age-appropriate and culturally diverse educational activities, including art, music and movement, dramatic play, science, pre-math, language, and literacy.

The club regularly meets in Brea, Fullerton, La Habra, La Mirada and Whittier, California. It conducts playgroups, hosts family events and is a valuable resource for German-speaking families in Southern California. Membership is free though there must be at least one German-speaking parent in the family to qualify.

GLOW (German Learning Opportunities Website) was the 2003 initiative of the Southern California Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German.  It is both an interactive data base registry of all types of German programs at all levels, and the first ongoing census of German teachers and students ever developed. If you are looking for a particular institution, location, type of program, or German teacher, this is the right way to start. And the best: it is all for free.
