The upholding of an open and ever-improving transatlantic relationship between the United States and Germany vested in the nations’ youth was the theme of the Wednesday, December 16 gala event at the Metropolitan Club in New York, hosted by the German foundation Youth for Understanding. The Foundation, a partner organization of the transatlantic association Atlantik-Brücke e.V. (Atlantic Bridge) chaired by Dr. Beate Lindemann and Dr. Walther Leisler Kiep, gathered its alumni of the Youth for Understanding Exchange program for the fundraising event “Enchanted Holiday Evening.”

Out of sheer necessity, small and remote islands often produce remarkable pools of talent. On November 19, much of that talent was on display when almost 80 choir singers and musicians crowded onto the stage of St. Theresa’s Cathedral in Bermuda’s capital, Hamilton. And more than 400 paying guests came to see and listen, including the British Governor Sir Richard Gozney and his wife, Lady Gozney.
Joschka Fischer Receives Leo Baeck Medal

The former German foreign minister (1998-2005), Joschka Fischer, was awarded with the Leo Baeck Medal at a ceremony at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York on Thursday, November 19. The award was presented to Mr. Fischer by the Honorary Co-Chairmen of the Leo Baeck Institute, Dr. Henry A. Kissinger and James D. Wolfensohn. Consul General Horst Freitag gave a speech at the gala award ceremony, in which he highlighted the unique contribution of the Leo Baeck Institute to safeguard and promote the memory of German-speaking Jewry.

To the guests of the German House, November 18 th will linger in their memories for a long time: Barbara Greenspan Shaiman held a lecture of her new book “Live Your Legacy Now!: Ten Simple Steps To Find Your Passion and Change the World.” She touched the audience by telling her personal memories, the strength she got out of it and her aim to make the world a better place based on her experiences.
