High-caliber panellists from Germany, France and the U.S. discussing "The Future of the Euro: Exit the Crisis - Building the Future of Europe" at the German House appreciated the determination of European policy-makers to solve fiscal problems in some member states of the euro zone. They agreed that the measures to be taken under the so-called "comprehensive package" will strengthen the stability and growth prospects of Europe's Economic and Monetary Union.

In the spirit of young, international musical talent and the 200th anniversary year of Franz Liszt, Mannes College The New School for Music performed pieces by Liszt and Beethoven at the German House on February 3. The composers are bound by a legendary event early in Franz Liszt's life: it is said that the kiss Liszt received from Beethoven as a young pianist launched the beginning of his international career as a performer and composer.

At the Leo Baeck Institute, former Federal Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer and Professor Norbert Frei presented the publication by the Independent Commission of Historians, "The Federal Office and the Past: German Diplomats in the Third Reich and in the Federal Republic," released at the end of last year.

Gustave Albin Whitehead, born Gustav Albin Weißkopf, immigrated from Germany to the United States in 1893, where he designed and built early flying machines and engines to power them. His story, celebrated at the Discovery Museum in Bridgeport, Connecticut in the 110th anniversary year of his first "flight" with a replica of his Number 21 aircraft, may change the history of "first in flight" in the United States.

The German Consulate General hosted a screening of the film "When We Leave" (Die Fremde)  with writer and director Feo Aladag on January 18. The film, which is also Germany's entry for Best Foreign-Language Film at this year's Oscars, has received critical acclaim internationally and is set to be released in the US on January 28.
