German Author to hold Poetics Chair at New York University

Funded by the German Foreign Office, New York University and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a Distinguished Chair for Contemporary Poetics at the German Department of NYU.

On Saturday, September 11 2010, German Consul General Horst Freitag joined First Lady Michelle Obama, former First Lady Laura Bush Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell and Mr. Gordon Felt, President of the Families of Flight 93 in honoring the victims of Flight 93 at a service of remembrance in Stoneycreek Township near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

New York’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg, this year’s "Grand Chairman" of the German-American Steuben Parade, Lars Halter and Deputy Consul General Oliver Schnakenberg opened the German-American Friendship Month on September 1, 2010 at the Biergarten at "The Standard" hotel.

"Missing" Paintings from Second World War Returned to Native German City of Pirmasens

Thanks to a unique case of generosity by an American citizen, the town of Pirmasens in Germany has recently restored the richness of its art museum’s collection by receiving 11 paintings originally housed in the city prior to the Second World War. Beth Ann McFadden of Davidson, NC, whose inherited art collection included these works, made the exceptional gesture of returning the paintings, including some by Pirmasens native Heinrich Bürkel, to the city’s municipal museum.

On June 23, a group of young and up-and-coming singers currently in training with the Martina Arroyo Foundation performed a stunning presentation of several arias of the German-speaking opera world before an audience at the residence of German Consul General Horst Freitag. The foundation serves to foster the musical bonds between Europe and the United States and aims to prepare and counsel young singers in the interpretation of operatic roles for public performance.

While worldwide economic crisis and recession have become commonplace topics of discussion in nearly every sector over the past few years, recent events in Europe have raised new questions regarding the financial outlook and economic policies of the European Union. In order to discuss these matters for concern in an open setting, representatives of the German-American business community invited Professor Nouriel Roubini of the New York University Stern School of Economics for a lecture and roundtable discussion on June 17 at the German House.

The German Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Paul, originally designed by German architect Francis A. Minuth, has served the needs of its German community since 1842, maintaining to this day a fully functioning, German-speaking congregation. On June 6, St. Paul's celebrated the completion of its newly renovated façade in a ceremony.

Since its founding in 1947, the United Nations International School (UNIS) in New York has consistently held up its high values of transcultural understanding and exchange, which are passed on to each new generation of students. The multifaceted, comprehensive education at UNIS prepares them for life in a globally interconnected world. On May 27,  a group of 8th grade UNIS students in the German language program along with their instructors visited the German House for a lunch in its 23rd floor restaurant.

Consul General Horst Freitag spoke at the ceremony in White Plains, expressing his well-wishes and congratulations to the Class of 2010, as well as to "Deutsche Schule New York," which will celebrate its 30th anniversary this year.
