The exquisite Gewandhaus Orchestra of Leipzig offered a splendid performance of two of Ludwig van Beethoven's most influential works in its February 22 concert at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco, earning several impromptu standing ovations from an appreciative audience. Led by internationally renowned and award-winning conductor Riccardo Chailly, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra is the oldest civic concert orchestra in the world, founded in 1743.
