On Sunday, September 24, German voters will head to the polls to elect the next Bundestag, the German parliament. The results will determine which parties are able to form a governing coalition and elect the Chancellor.
Foreign Minister Gabriel will address the General Assembly on Thursday. He will also discuss current conflicts – from Ukraine to North Korea and from disarmament to denuclearization – in bilateral talks with numerous counterparts, for example those from China and Russia.

Germany is seeking to become a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. Former Foreign Minister Steinmeier announced the candidacy for 2019/20 in Hamburg on Monday (27 June). The elections are expected to take place at the General Assembly in June 2018.
