Passport to Applicants under the Age of 18

Passports for applicants under the age of 18 will be valid for six years, effective as of November 1, 2007.

Passport applications must be filed in person at the foreign mission responsible for your consular district during visiting hours.  Effective as of November 1, 2007, a European passport will be issued as a rule for children and adolescents 12 years and older.  For children under the age of 12, a child’s passport may be issued at the express request of the parents.  As it is not necessary for children up to the age of six to provide fingerprints or their own signature, these passport applications may continue to be submitted by mail.  Starting at the age of six, it will, however, be absolutely necessary for the child to appear in person at the mission in order to apply for a passport.

If you are applying for a European passport for your child for the first time, it may be necessary to provide a declaration of the child’s legal name.  Information about declaration of a legal name appears below on this page (in German language only).

You will need to following documents to apply for a passport for an applicant under the age of 18:

- Completed application form

- Fingerprints for children over six years old (fingerprints are taken at the time of application)

- Two identical, biometrically-compatible, recent passport photos

- Certified copy of the valid U.S. residency permit (U.S. resident alien card, U.S. residency visa, or U.S. passport)

- Statement of consent by the parents on the reverser side of the application form
