100th Anniversary of the Youth Hostel

The youth hostel - the brainchild of a German teacher out on a summertime hiking trip with some of his students - celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2009. The first permanent youth hostel in the world was a 12th-century castle in the western German town of Altena.
