Memorize D-A-A-D
Scholarships? – Just ask DAAD
If you’re thinking about studying in Germany and applying for a scholarship, you need to memorize four letters: D-A-A-D. In English, they stand for the German Academic Exchange Service, a federally funded organization that gives study-abroad grants to some 50,000 German and foreign students, (post)graduates, and researchers each year, making it one of the largest grantors of academic mobility worldwide.

Among its many other helpful resources, DAAD maintains an extensive database of scholarships for which you can apply. This web-based scholarship database provides you with a convenient way to research various kinds of scholarships, including those offered by other funding organizations, such as political foundations, religious organizations, or business and industry.
DAAD alone supports roughly 1,200 Americans every year during their academic exchange in Germany. Please note, however, that funding for a full program of study from the first to the last semester is generally not possible with the DAAD or most other organizations.
To qualify for the highly competitive scholarships, applicants must primarily demonstrate above-average academic ability in their field of study and particular public service or social commitment; an applicant’s personal or socio-economic circumstances play only a secondary role.
DAAD maintains a regional office in New York City, making it very easy and convenient for you to receive the latest information about studying in Germany and scholarship opportunities.
So remember D-A-A-D, and we are convinced that your stay in Germany will be a very productive and enjoyable one!
