The NATO partners have come together in Chicago to consult on the security challenges facing the North Atlantic Alliance. The summit meeting on May 20 and 21 is focused on the situation in Afghanistan as well as the Alliance’s military capabilities and its relations with partner countries.

Two major international summits are taking place this weekend in the United States. Chancellor Merkel will join her counterparts from industrialized states at the summit of G8 leaders at Camp David on Friday and Saturday. She will then travel on to Chicago, where she will be joined by Foreign Minister Westerwelle and Defense Minister de Maizière for the 2012 NATO Summit.
