Reconstruction Aid - Education

Through the national education programme (EQUIP) Germany has funded school infrastructure for about 279,000 pupils as well as trainings for 32,000 teachers. Beyond this multilateral contribution, the German Federal Government started a bilateral basic education programme in 2005 for the provinces of Badakhshan, Kunduz, Takhar and Paktia, adding Balkh province in 2007 and Sar-e Pul province in 2009. The programme includes technical support to the Ministry of Education, the strengthening of teachers’ education with a special focus on female teachers and the construction and repair of teacher training centers, experimental schools and dormitories for students. These contributions will be expanded further within the framework of Germany’s development initiative for Afghanistan. The goal is to provide schools and to train teachers for 500,000 pupils in northern Afghanistan by the end of 2013.

Germany is also supporting the rehabilitation/construction of technical and vocational schools in Kabul, Kandahar, Khost and in various northern provinces. The Kabul Mechanical Institute alone is designed to train up to 2,300 young people. In the area of higher education, more than 600 Afghan university teachers have participated in trainings in Germany, while more than 300 courses have been offered by German scientists at universities in Kabul, Herat and Mazar-e Sharif.
