An informational tour billed “Climate Protection – International Cooperation on Climate and Energy Issues” took place in Berlin, Dessau, and Bonn in May 2009. Fifteen journalists from seven different countries, including four from the United States, traveled to Germany on the trip, which was organized by the German Foreign Office. The six-day tour was aimed at presenting German and European perspectives on climate change and environmental industrial policy and at encouraging discussion.
The daily schedule of events entailed meetings with, among others, experts from the German Ministry for the Environment and the Foreign Office as well as excursions to leading businesses in the environmental industry.

The visit to the “Black Pump” power plant in Jaenschwalde, near the Polish border, was particularly well received by the participants. The power plant has the world’s first test center for a 100-percent reduction in carbon emissions. The “oxyfuel process,” which the power plant uses, makes it possible to prepare emitted carbon dioxide for long-term underground sequestration.
The participants also met with Andreas Kreamer, Director of the Ecologic Institute, for a riverside chat on the Spree River to discuss a sustainable economy and renewable energies in light of the global economic crisis. The solar-driven boat ride led the guests past the government district, with its energy-efficient buildings.
