Thousands of journalists and media professionals got a taste of the opportunities Germany has to offer them at Unity '08, the national convention for journalists of color in Chicago.

With a booth at the convention's expo in July 2008, the German Embassy, the German National Tourist Office and the Goethe-Institut shared professional opportunities, language education and travel information with some 6,000 journalists, media professionals and educators.

A large number of conference participants showed interest in the numerous fellowships and exchange programs that send American journalists to work or study in Germany every year. In fact, several alumni of these programs, including the Arthur F. Burns Fellowship, the RIAS Berlin program and Fulbright, came by to share their great experiences in Germany.

As the only country presenting its professional opportunities, language and tourism at Unity, Germany was well received. "Why is Germany at Unity?" was the most common question participants posed when they saw the booth. The reason was clear once they learned about the exchange programs and fellowships specifically for journalists.

The Unity '08 Convention brings together the four major organizations representing journalists of color: the Asian American Journalists Association, the National Association of Black Journalists, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and the Native American Journalists Association. Every four years, the organizations hold their annual conventions together.

One of the highlights of this year's convention was the Presidential Candidate Forum. On Sunday, Sen. Barack Obama addressed thousands of Unity 2008 attendees at a live forum in his first appearance since returning to the U.S. after spending a week overseas, including Berlin.
