Highlights from Germany's rich tradition of independent rock, pop, hiphop and electro music are being featured in a new monthly Internet radio program called "Popcast – Current Music from Germany."

It delivers music played on one of Germany's best radio programs for those interested in off-the-charts pop and rock music - "Zündfunk", a new program produced six days a week by Bavarian public radio.

Now, Zündfunk and the Goethe-Institut have joined forces to showcase Germany's latest independent rock, pop, hiphop and electro music in a monthly podcast that can be heard on the Internet or can be downloaded by subscription.

Germany is well-known for its outstanding musical heritage, with 80 opera houses, dozens of professional orchestras, numerous music festivals and a thriving club and pub music scene. Yet local pop and rock music that is not part of the mainstream music scene is not so well-known internationally.

The aim of the new cooperative venture between Zündfunk and the Goethe-Institut is to promote German independent music abroad.
