The Sandmännchen in Pictures

Created in East Germany, the Sandmännchen (little sandman), has been sending children off to bed in a daily super-cute evening TV broadcast for kids since 1959. In honor of his 50th birthday the first feature-length film starring the Sandmännchen is scheduled to open in German movie theaters in 2009.

The Sandmännchen, or little sandman, has helped tired tots head off to bed since 1959 and turns 50 this year. Created in East Germany, he was adopted and has been equally adored by all Germans since 1990 - replacing his West German counterpart on TV sets across the country - and is about to hit the big screen.
