The Berghain club in Berlin was voted the best club in the world in a poll among DJs conducted for the highly regarded British music publication DJ Mag. In its Top 100 DJ Award category, Dutch DJ Armin van Buuren topped the list with Paul van Dyk claiming third spot as the highest German. The “DJMag Top 100 DJs” Awards 2008 took place in the legendary Ministry of Sound club in London.
Around 350,000 voters from 167 countries voted for their favorite DJs. Other Germans who made the list included Markus Schulz (8th place), Kyau & Albert Loebau (22nd place) from Sachsen and Frankfurt’s Sven Väth (24th place). Berlin, with six entries, emerged as the city with the most clubs in the top 100. The DJs questioned voted the “Berghain” with its accompanying Panorama Bar as the best club.

The former power station near the Ostbahnhof in Friedrichshein is notorious for its hedonistic atmosphere, its selective door policy and endless opening hours, with parties running into the late hours of Sunday evening each week.
The Watergate club on banks of the river Spree and at the edge of the Kreuzberg district in East Berlin made it to eighth spot. It draws top DJs each weekend with M.A.N.D.Y holding a monthly residency there.
Germany’s other techno hotspot, Frankfurt, pops up on the list with Sven Väth’s megaclub Cocoon coming in 11th. This is a hotspot for top DJs as the likes of DJ Hell, Richie Hawtin and Ricardo Villalobos all spin their discs regularly there. Just down the road in Offenbach, the Robert Johnson club makes an appearance in 24th position. Located in a former boat house on the edge of the river Main, the medium-sized club is low key in its design, instead focusing the attention on the music, with has a sound system to make any club proud.
