About 250 young professionals who came to dance, dine and drink at the German Embassy’s “Freedom Without Walls Oktoberfest Gala” on October 19 experienced the special ambience of Munich’s “Wiesn” fairgrounds right here in Washington.

The guests, variously decked out in tuxes, dirndl and lederhosen, enjoyed fine beers, hot sausages and the sounds of an authentic German brass band.

While beer and bratwurst were as central to the German Embassy’s party as they are to the original in Munich, it was not the only focus of the evening.  The young German and American crowd also celebrated 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, which happened on November 9, 1989.

In partnership with the event planning organization Things To Do DC, the Embassy regularly invites young professionals to share in events that combine cultural exchange, networking and fun.

Freedom Without Walls: 1989-2009

The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 marked the beginning of a new era in history. It was the end of the cold war, the beginning of a fully united Europe and proof that peaceful change is possible, even in the moments when it seems most unlikely.
