Maine Governor Proclaims November 9 "Freedom Without Walls" Day

Maine Governor John E. Baldacci has issued an official proclamation declaring November 9, 2009 "Freedom Without Walls" Day in commemoration of the fall of the Berlin Wall 20 years ago on November 9th, 1989. Students at Bowdoin College in Maine have been active in the Freedom Without Walls campaign celebrating the fall of the wall, as has Germany's Honorary Consul in Portland Maine, Adrian Kendall.

Proclamation
WHEREAS, twenty years ago today, the people of Germany tore down the Berlin Wall, which had stood for so long as a grim symbol of the separation of free people and those living under dictatorships; and
WHEREAS, on that day freedom triumphed over tyranny and peaceful change triumphed over authoritarianism; and
WHEREAS, the dismantling of the Berlin Wall reunited Germany and helped spread freedom across Central and Eastern Europe; and
WHEREAS, these democracies today contribute to a strong Europe, and Maine values their friendship and their partnership on the challenges and opportunities that face us today; and
WHEREAS, On Freedom without Walls Day, we recognize all of those who fought for liberty and helped end the oppression of Central and Eastern Europe; and
WHEAREAS, we recognize the service and sacrifice of our Maine men and women, and their families who served in the Armed Forces of the United States during this time,
Now, THEREFORE, I, JOHN E. BALDACCI, Governor of the State of Maine, do hereby proclaim November 9, 2009 as
FREEDOM WITHOUT WALLS DAY
throughout the State of Maine, and urge all citizens to recognize this observance.
In testimony whereof, I have caused the Great Seal of the State to be hereunto affixed GIVEN under my hand at Augusta this fourth day of November Two Thousand and Nine.
