Professor Andreas Tünnermann, director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering and director of the Institute for Applied Physics at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, has been appointed Fellow for 2010 at the Optical Society of America.

Tünnermann was chosen for his excellent research and leadership at the forefront of developing high-performance solid laser threads, as well as his pioneering work in micro laser technology.

The Optical Society of America (OSA) was founded in 1916 and unites scientists, engineers, technicians, educators and entrepreneurs conducting business and research in the field of optics and photonics. OSA has 155,000 members from 95 countries. Its mission is the global promotion and dissemination of the generation, application and protection of knowledge in the optics/photonics field.

Tünnermann's research focuses primarily on generating and controlling light, with a particular emphasis on so-called all-solid-state lasers. His work in this field  has greatly influenced  developments to date on the stimulation of solid lasers by diode lasers, notably in the area of of laser threads and wave frequency lasers.

On the basis of newfangled laser thread concepts he demonstrated the scaling of starting capacity while at the same time expanding the emissions' range of wave frequency lasers. 

Tünnermann has also engaged in pioneering work in the field of ultra-fast optics. Working with his team of scientists he has demonstrated the precise and minimally destructive structuring of specific substances under the influence of ultra-short pulsations. At present tests are underway with companies to determine to what extent this processs kann be adapted for commercial purposes.

Tünnermann is the author of more than 250 publications in renowned international journals. He has been honored many times for his work, including with the Röntgen Prize in 1997 from the Justus-Liebig Universtiy in Gießen, Germany; the Prize of the scientific Society for Laser Technology in 1998; the Otto-Schott Award in 2003; the Leibinger Innovation Award in 2004; and the Gottfried-Wilhelm-Leibniz-Preis der German Research Foundation (DFG) in 2005.
