Last Saturday, after five months of waiting and anticipation, it was finally time for the All-Star Team of the 2009 German Street Soccer Cup to depart for their week-long trip to Erfurt, Germany.

The six young kickers, three each from Atlanta and Miami, were selected for their great soccer skills but also for their social awareness and great team play.

They will participate in the "Soccer without Frontiers" camp in Erfurt with many other teams from Germany, Bulgaria, Poland, and Romania.

The participants will enjoy a diverse program of soccer practice and games as well as cultural exchange. They will visit the beautiful historic city of Weimar, known for the famous German poets Johann Wolfgang Goethe and Friedrich Schiller. A somewhat more somber trip will also take them to the Buchenwald Memorial.

Three of the participants had come in from Miami the same morning and made first connections at the airport before they even boarded the plane to Düsseldorf. For most of the kids, this is their first trip to Germany. Excitement and expectations were high as the group started to get to know each other.

Back row from left: Amiri Abraham (Atlanta), Eddy Diaz (Miami), Jill Robbins (Team Leader, Atlanta), Kaylo Estevez (Miami) and Sammy Korgi (Atlanta).

We are very grateful to Jill Robbins, director of the non-profit organization "Soccer in the Streets" for stepping in as the team’s leader on short notice. Mrs. Robbins has been to Germany on two previous occasions, one of which was the "Street Football World" in 2006 where her team participated as the only North American team.

Remembering this previous experience, Mrs. Robbins wrote to the All-Star Team before their departure, "While it was important for the kids to play well, it was more important for them to try to gain as much exposure outside of the field during the event. When I was most proud of the kids who were selected to go on that trip was when they left their comfort zones and made a point of reaching out to the kids from the other countries, including those with much different backgrounds."

Guided by these words of encouragement, the participants will have many opportunities to make new friends and learn about different cultures as they will meet up, play soccer and share their living quarters with the other international teams.

HAVE FUN!

A big thank you to the trip’s sponsor Coca-Cola for making this wonderful cultural adventure possible!
