The exhibition “Berlin –City of Change” shows why Berlin is the place to be – for city life, science, business, fashion & design and history – 20 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall. In recognition of this decisive event and in order to demonstrate the fundamental change Berlin underwent during the last 20 years, the German Consulate General in Boston, together with Massport and Lufthansa, brought this special exhibition to Logan International Airport.
Thomas Kinton, CEO of Massport, LH District Sales Manager Marius Carstensen, Consul General Friedrich Löhr and Deputy Consul General Claudia Schütt welcomed numerous guests to the opening reception on October 28th, 2009 in Logan’s Terminal E. Thomas Kinton highlighted how the people of Berlin gained back their freedom in 1989 and declared the airport as a place where freedom is most visible and to be the ideal location for remembering this unique occurrence. Marius Carstensen commemorated the end of Berlin’s division and the developments which followed during the last 20 years.

Consul General Friedrich Löhr described the fall of the Berlin Wall as the beginning of a new era in Germany as well as all over Europe and introduced Wolf Biermann, poet, songwriter, essayist, and critic of the GDR regime. The artist performed three German songs from his present tour “Berlin, du deutsche, deutsche Frau” (“Berlin, you German, German Woman”) and provided an insight into his personal experiences in East Berlin.

After Biermann’s performance, the guests had the opportunity to view the exhibition’s 14 banners that summarize the history of Berlin and draw attention to its current variety. The Jelani Bauman Trio enterained the guests with jazz standards. Enjoying a delicious luncheon, they could personally meet Wolf Biermann, study the exhibits and mingle with the other guests.
The exhibition is part of the beBerlin capital city campaign and will be on display until December 11th, 2009. It will attract international passengers reminding them of the 20th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall and the diversity and multiculturalism of Germany’s vibrant capital.
