Commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall
Interpreting the theme “bringing down walls/breaking down barriers” (literally and symbolically), the international art and music “Rise & Fall” took place on Thursday, November 19th at the Enormous Room in Cambridge, MA.
The event commemorated the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Part art installation and part DJ event, “Rise & Fall” featured artwork displayed from 19 countries and 19 states and music performed by renowned Turkish-German DJ/producer, DJ Ipek Ipekcioglu (www.djipek.com). Her performances are an embodiment of contemporary Germany, smashing musical, cultural and social barriers through an eclectic mix of Middle Eastern sounds and Berlin Electro.

The German Consulate General presented “Rise & Fall” as part of the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9th. An art installation on a large screen and on Kodak digital frames interpreted the theme “breaking down barriers.” Professional as well as amateur artists exhibited what “bringing down walls” means to them; be it directly related to the fall of the Berlin Wall or on a more symbolic, personal, cultural or social level.
As a daughter of Turkish immigrants to Germany, DJ Ipek Ipekcioglu personifies the breaking down of cultural barriers and stigma. Raised as an ethnic (Turkish) and religious (Muslim) minority in Germany, her style of music represents her cultural diversity and pride. Mixing eclectic Eurasian sounds and Berlin Electro broke the audience’s inhibitions and made people dance to her vibrant tunes.

Combining several art forms and media is a great interpretation of crossing borders. The event brought a different approach to the commemoration of the fall of the Berlin Wall 20 years ago. “Rise & Fall” demonstrated how to get over barriers artistically – in a cultural, social and even historical perspective.
Traveling across the United States, one can experience the mobile exhibition and DJ Ipek at several locations through November 27. For further information, please visit www.rise-fall.com
