Minister Krautscheid, leading a large delegation from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), visited Los Angeles in conjunction with the German Currents film festival, held in Los Angeles from September 30 – October 4, 2009.

German Currents, organized by the Goethe-Institut and the American Cinematheque in collaboration with Film Foundation NRW and German Films, showcases new films from Germany, and this year the festival focused on films from NRW.

Minister Krautscheid attended the opening of German Currents where he introduced, North Face, the first film to be shown at the festival.  The mountaineering drama, based on a true story about a competition to climb the most dangerous rock face in the Alps, was produced in NRW.

Here also to promote his state as Germany's media capital and prime production center, Minister Krautscheid held talks with studio and production company representatives and gave a presentation entitled “First Choice in Film Financing and Production” to Hollywood insiders and international film industry members at a reception he hosted at the Peninsula Beverly Hills hotel. “Our objective is to make the international film industry more aware of the outstanding production conditions in North Rhine-Westphalia and so attract as many productions as possible to the state,” he stated. He invited everyone to come to NRW and film their next production there, especailly in light of the generous incentives and favorable conditions the state has to offer.

In an effort to further academic collaboration and cultural exchange, Minister Krautscheid signed the Memorandum of Understanding for International Academic Cooperation between the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television and the ifs internationale film school in Cologne, Germany. The two film schools have plans for a joint summer school project next year in Cologne.
