Day of German Unity Celebrations
On October 3rd about 400 guests gathered at the Consul General's residence in Coral Gables to celebrate 19 years of German unity. The reception focussed on the upcoming 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall under the motto of "Freedom Without Walls". On a large screen video footage and pictures of the history of the Berlin Wall and its opening could be seen throughout the evening. German soprano Christine Reber performed the two national anthems and a song program in German, English and Spanish. Cuban-born action artist Octávio Campos with his spectacular performance brought the modern spirit of united Germany closer to the audience. In his remarks Consul General Klaus Ranner recalled a year of commemoration of several events in history, but particularly looked back on the days of the peaceful revolution, the opening of the gates at the for decades heavily guarded border crossings between West and East Berlin and eventually the unification. Apparently German-style culinary specialities and drinks were also conducive to an evening as interesting as entertaining.
