On August 1st 2009, the German House, home of the German Consulate General, the Permanent Mission of Germany to the United Nations, the German Academic Exchange Service, the German Research Foundation and university liaison offices, joined the energy conservation program“PowerPay! New York.” This particular demand response program pays participants for their efforts in energy reduction during times of high electric demands.
Especially in the hot summer months, between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., when the use of airconditioning increases and the electric grid can become unstable, the German House will follow an energy reduction call by the coordinators of the program, the Energy Curtailment Specialists Inc. (ECS). One of the initiative’s short-term goals is to prevent blackouts in the State of New York. Long-term, the program’s effect could reduce the number of nuclear power stations that supply New York with energy.
The first year, the German House engages itself to decrease energy consumption to 372 kW during an energy reduction call. Its efforts will be evaluated in regular performance reports led by the ECS. If the target is met, the ECS will pay direct rewards. Should the German House not succeed, it will face sanctions instead.
By joining the initiative, the German House sets an example in the field of environmental responsibility measures, and implements the ecological ideas it is strongly promoting in international negotiations.
