Under the themes of “bringing down walls” and “breaking down barriers”, the revolutionary art and music event “Rise & Fall” took place on Thursday, November 5th at the Public Assembly in Brooklyn, where it also opened its US tour.
The German Consulate General presented “Rise & Fall” as part of the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9th. This highly mobile exhibition and dance event featured digital art as well as as digital representations of art accompanied by live DJ-ing by DJ Ipek Ipekcioglu. Showing the fall of the Wall, the Japanese paint perfomer PESU worked live to the beats of “Disco Partisan.” An art installation displaying Kodak digital frames further interpreted the theme “breaking down barriers.” Professional as well as amateur artists there exhibited what “bringing down walls” means to them; be it directly related to the fall of the Berlin Wall or on a more symbolic, personal, cultural or social level.

As a daughter of Turkish immigrants to Germany, DJ Ipek Ipekcioglu personifies the breaking down of cultural barriers and stigma. Raised as an ethnic (Turkish) and religious (Muslim) minority in Germany, her style of music represents her cultural diversity and pride. Mixing musical, cultural and social barriers with eclectic Eurasian sounds and Berlin Electro broke the audience’s inhibitions and made people dance to her vibrant tunes.
Combining several art forms and media is a great interpretation of crossing borders and brought a different approach to the commemoration of the fall of the Berlin Wall 20 years ago. “Rise & Fall” demonstrated how to get over barriers artisically – in a cultural, social and even historical perspective.
Traveling across the United States, one can experience the mobile exhibition and DJ Ipek at several locations through November 27. For more information, please visit www.rise-fall.com
