North American Students Complete Research at RWTH

Aug 11, 2009

As part of the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) International, 36 students from top American universities, among them, MIT, GeorgiaTech, University of California at Berkeley, and Purdue University, worked intensively for 10 weeks on various research projects. The guest research students, along with bachelor of science students at the technical academy RWTH Aachen, have now presented the results of their scientific work at a large colloquium.

The guest students dealt with a wide array of interesting and cutting-edge scientific topics from virtually all the departments at RWTH. Some of the contributions were presented to the audience in more detail in brief panels focusing on particular subjects. The audience then had the opportunity to discuss the projects with the young researchers. Professor Peter Russell, Dean of Architecture and Commissioner for the U.S. and Canada in the Office of the Provost, led the event, along with Dr. Heide Naderer, Head of International University Relations, and Beate Wassenberg, Program Coordinator. On conclusion of the colloquium, the students received participation awards, which they proudly accepted.

The colloquium simultaneously marked the end of the U.S. and Canadian guests’ tenure at RWTH Aachen. During their time in Aachen, they gathered valuable research experience and at the same time acquired or improved their German language skills. In the tri-border area, they became acquainted with a Europe that is growing closer together as a region, as well as with student life in the city of Aachen and the German scientific community. They return to their homes in the United States and Canada enriched by a great deal of academic and life experiences as well as by new personal and professional contacts, which they will continue to foster at their universities.

Under the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP), students are offered the opportunity early in their studies to delve into research and gain practical experience by working on a project for a limited period of time. During the project, they are mentored and supported by RWTH scientists. The program has been successfully implemented at RWTH Aachen since the beginning of 2008 and has been particularly well received by North American students who would like to spend their summer vacation time in Germany.  With the program, RWTH Aachen is making an important contribution to the active advancement of young scholars in science and research. The UROP has been recording growing participation numbers since its introduction last year, in terms of both students and mentoring scientists, who are glad to have highly motivated and qualified students assist them in their own research work. The program is part of the Excellence Initiative and financed through funds of the German Research Foundation and RWTH Aachen.
