The White Ribbon (Das weiße Band – Eine deutsche Kindergeschichte) is a dark drama set in a small northern German village on the eve of World War I. After a series of disturbing accidents, it eventually becomes clear that someone is acting out ritual punishments based on strict morals and social norms. The film, a German co-production, stars award-winning German actors Ulrich Turkur, Burghart Klaußner, among others.

Just days ago, Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke accepted the awards for best film, best director and best screenwriter for his film The White Ribbon at the European Film Awards ceremony on December 12, 2009. The film has also received the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and has been selected to represent Germany in the competition for best foreign language film at the 2010 Academy Awards.

The Last Station, written and directed by Michael Hoffmann, is a German co-production that boasts an international, star-studded cast. An adaptation from the novel by Jay Parini, this historically based film looks at the turbulent last months in the life of Russian author and philosopher Leo Tolstoy  (1828-1910), who penned masterpieces such as War and Peace and Anna Karenina.

Christopher Plummer was nominated for the Golden Globe Award in the category of best supporting actor in a motion picture for his role as Leo Tolstoy. Helen Mirren, who was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in the category of best actress in a motion picture, portrays Sofya, Tolstoy’s wife of 48 years and mother of their 13 children. Despite her deep dedication to her husband, which she had proved by serving as copyist for the hefty tome War and Peace, their relationship was quite troubled, especially after Leo Tolstoy renounced writing and declared his wish to give away all of his personal property. The movie also examines the philosophical and religious beliefs of the writer and his followers, the Tolstoyans.

The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards, which recognize both television and motion picture achievement, will take place on January 17, 2010. The nominations were announced on December 15, 2009.
