Chancellor Merkel Welcomes Runoff in Afghanistan

Chancellor Angela Merkel welcomes the statement by Afghan President Hamid Karzai that he will take part in a second vote in accordance with the Afghan constitution. This will represent a significant contribution to the legitimacy of the democratic election process in Afghanistan.
The Chancellor expressed to the election commission and the complaints commission her recognition of their work. They reached their decision to the best of their knowledge and in agreement with international standards.
Merkel encouraged the Afghan voters to again go to the polls. It is of great importance for the future of the country that they cast their votes once more.
