Chancellor Merkel to Meet with President Obama, Address Congress
Chancellor Angela Merkel will speak before a joint meeting of the United States Congress on Tuesday, November 3, following an invitation extended to her by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in June. Merkel’s visit and her address to US legislators will mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989.

Merkel, who has just begun her second term as Chancellor, will first meet with US President Barack Obama at the White House on Tuesday. The two leaders will talk about transatlantic and bilateral relations, security policy, as well as climate and world economy issues, among other topics.
“As we continue to strengthen our relationship, our two nations must renew a continued commitment of confronting the global economic, environmental, and security challenges of the 21st century,” Speaker Pelosi said in announcing the visit.
Ambassador Klaus Scharioth called Speaker Pelosi’s invitation to Chancellor Merkel a great honor for Germany. “This visit will give Chancellor Merkel, who will head the newly elected German Government, an opportunity to highlight the strength of our bilateral cooperation in confronting the tasks ahead of us,” Ambassador Scharioth said.
Chancellor Merkel will be the first German head of government to address a joint meeting of the US House and Senate.
