On November 5, Ambassador Klaus Scharioth hosted the opening event of the Core Group Meeting of the Munich Security Conference at his residence. The Core Group Meeting is the first outreach meeting in the United States in the more than 40 years of existence of the Munich Security Conference, the most important meeting of its kind in Europe. It is headed jointly by Senator Chuck Hagel and Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger. More than 80 high-ranking decision makers from Europe and the United States gather in Washington, DC, to discuss key issues of international security policy.

On the invitation of Ambassador Scharioth, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle during his first visit in Washington addressed the meeting in a brief speech in English and shared his personal ties to the United States and his perspectives of transatlantic relations. In his remarks, US Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg highlighted the importance of the Meeting and expressed his gratitude to the organizers.

Among the guests of the Ambassador were former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, Secretary General of the Council of the European Union Javier Solana, Senators Joseph Lieberman and Chuck Hagel, members of German Parliament Ruprecht Polenz and Hans Ulrich Klose, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Vygaudas Usackas, Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Ellen Tauscher, former National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley as well as numerous other high-ranking representatives from business, policy, think tanks und media.

There is broad agreement between Germany and the United States on many international issues, German Foreign Minister Westerwelle noted following talks in Washington on November 5 with U.S. Secretary of State Clinton and senators from both political parties.  Afghanistan, Iran, and the future of Opel were on the agenda.
