Westerwelle: Iran’s Announced Intention to Expand Uranium Enrichment a Step in the Wrong Direction

Nov 30, 2009

On November 30, Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle commented in Berlin on Iran’s announced intention to expand uranium enrichment:

Iran’s announcement that it intends to expand uranium enrichment is clearly a step in the wrong direction. Iran must know the patience of the international community is not inexhaustible. I call on Iran to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency without any ifs or buts and to fulfill its international obligations.

Clearly, if Iran spurns our outstretched hand, it must realize this may mean further sanctions.

The primary goal of German foreign policy is to preserve peace and security in the world. The expanded concept of security covers not only questions of conflict prevention, defense, disarmament and arms controls, but also economic, ecological, social and human rights issues.
