Where was I when the Wall fell? Oddly enough, I was in “Doughboy City” on the offensive. We patrolled during the night and raided at sunrise. When we re-grouped to attack again we were given the news of the Wall coming down. There were a lot of hesitant looks between the soldiers and a lot of “can we go home now” questions. [“Doughboy City” was a U.S. Army training range in West Berlin.] I stayed in Berlin until July 1991. I saw the deactivation of the 4th Battalion, 502nd Inf., the unit I was assigned to. I also saw the line of people waiting for their free 100 marks and the raid on the grocery stores in the West that left East vendors wanting and West citizens without their daily staples. I also saw the Pink Floyd wall erected in no-mans-land.
All in all, one of the most unique events I have ever been present for.
