Thirty doctoral students from the US, Canada, China and Germany gathered in Berlin from November 28 to December 5 for a week-long young researchers’ workshop on climate and energy policy.

Hosted by the Free University of Berlin (Freie Universität Berlin), the workshop provided a forum for exchanging research ideas, promoting network building among leading young researchers and examining developments in transatlantic climate and energy relations.

The students participated in a variety of briefing sessions with representatives from German Federal Ministries, the EU Commission, the U.S. and Canadian Embassies in Berlin, and Think Tanks, which offered a unique opportunity to discuss European and North American perspectives on renewable energy development, climate change and energy security.

Professor Miranda Schreurs, the workshop’s host and Director of the Environmental Policy Research Center at the Free University of Berlin, said the workshop’s goal was to help create new professional networks and relationships between the young researchers. She said she looks forward to expanding the initiative in the coming years.

A young researcher from Canada agreed with Professor Schreurs, calling the event “a fantastic opportunity for dialogue and networking with colleagues from Berlin but also other places like Toronto, Harvard, Columbia, Berkeley or Beijing.”

The workshop was organized by the Environmental Policy Research Center at Freie Universität Berlin in cooperation with the U.S. Embassy and Canadian Embassy in Berlin, and was part of the Transatlantic Climate Bridge – an initiative of the German Foreign Office and the German Federal Ministry of the Environment, Nuclear Safety and Nature Conservation.
