Brown University's "Campus Weeks" events kick off on November 4, with a screening of Goodbye Lenin, and include lectures, a poster exhibition, and semi-formal gala with German music.

Among Brown's program will be a presentation by Reiner Möckelmann, a retired German diplomat and director of Summer School Wust, which provides English-language learning programs to young people in the eastern German state of Saxony Anhalt.

Möckelmann, who was formerly German consul general in Istanbul, will address the topic of "West meets East – Past Experiences and Current Challenges".

And a Freedom Without Walls Roundable Discussion on November 6 featuring professors William Crossgrove, Marilyn Rueschemeyer and Duncan Smith will focus on the topic: "Brown/Rostock Exchange 1979-1989: Scholarly Exchanges with East Germany".

The observance culminates on November 9, with a 16-foot long, eight-foot high sheetrock replica of the Berlin Wall being built on The College Green, which was dedicated on October 21, 2009, after a team of arts students spent the summer months working on it, as reported by the German Consulate in Boston.

Now, on November 9, the public is invited to take part in a wall art competition and a spoken word competition before tearing down the wall with hammers.

This "Tear Down This Wall" event will be preceded by a Wall Art Compeititon and a Public Speaking and Spoken Word Competition, during which students can peform a short "speech" or "poetry slam" about the fall of the wall. The winning speech will be entered into a nationwide competition. First prize, with the winner selected by the German Information Center USA at the German Embassy in Washington, is a trip for two to Berlin.

The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 marked the beginning of a new era in history. It was the end of the cold war, the beginning of a fully united Europe and proof that peaceful change is possible, even in the moments when it seems most unlikely.

“Freedom Without Walls”: Boston College dedicates Berlin Wall replica

Freedom without Walls

As a part of its “Freedom Without Walls” campaign to celebrate the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the German Embassy in Washington, DC selected 29 universities and colleges throughout the US for special Campus Weeks. As one of six selected institutions in New England and the only one in the Boston area, Boston College presented an important part of this project on “Freedom Without Walls”. At a kick-off event on October 21, 2009, a replica of the Berlin Wall was dedicated on the Campus Green and is on display during the commemoration. The panels metaphorically represent the collapse of the Berlin Wall and a passageway to freedom.
