The German Club at the University of Alaska has put together a special program for November 9, 2009, including a panel discussion featuring faculty members who saw the Berlin Wall come down 20 years ago.

"Here at the University of Alaska, we have organized our own series of events in order to remember the 20th anniversary of the Fall of the Wall," said Josef K. Glowa, Associate Professor of German, Department of Foreign Languages & Literature, University of Alaska Fairbanks.

"The members of the student German Club together with other student organizations will erect a replica of the Wall next and demolish it after a panel discussion on November 9. The  panel consists exclusively of faculty members, among them former East- and West Germans, and Russians who were eyewitnesses to the events in 1989."

The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 marked the beginning of a new era in history. It was the end of the cold war, the beginning of a fully united Europe and proof that peaceful change is possible, even in the moments when it seems most unlikely.
