This year marks the 25th anniversary of Marlene Dietrich’s death. Dietrich Rides Again is a theatrical embodiment of the great German star. It moves from a Weimar boarding school where she was a serious student of violin, to a Berlin cabaret stage, to the offices of UFA, where she auditioned for the role of Lola Lola in The Blue Angel, to Hollywood where she reigned as a star for Paramount and other studios, to her enlisting in the US Army performing for the troops in the front lines of the struggle against Nazism. Along the way there are songs that Dietrich made her own: Falling in Love Again, Lili Marlene, Boys In The Backroom and others many by German composers and lyricists. In the works is a cabaret to be presented in August – a form that was very close to Dietrich’s heart and as a full musical in September and October.
Justyna Kostek is taking on the joyful challenge of embodying Dietrich which she does with the kind of energy and ease that only a very few actors can summon. This is partly due to this actor’s training in experimental theatre in Denmark and Commedia dell’arte. Kostek is a young international theatre artist who brings a European sensibility to the portrayal of the star, who introduced Americans and fascinated them for half a century with her own European upbringing and point of view. Directing these productions is Oliver Conant, who has long been working in the experimental and non-commercial theatre scene in New York City. The team also includes Jono Mainelli who has been an accompanist to such luminary song birds as Patti LuPone. Dietrich Rides Again comes at a time when Americans are becoming increasingly anxious and uncertain about the ugliness, bigotry and moral incoherence of this time in their history and are looking for examples of people who combined talent, glamour, sexiness and high principles. What better way to recover these values?
