We are proud to announce the exhibition “History of Touches” dedicated to the photographic work of the artist  Elias Wessel. History of Touches brings together smaller formats of Wessels On- and B/W Series of his latest work cycle Die Summe meiner Daten / History of Touches, 2017.

The work cycle Die Summe meiner Daten / History of Touches commenced in 2016 with the thirty images Off Series. Therein the artist  "[…] has taken the immediacy of traces and marks, fingerprints, smears, etc., from the surface of touch screen surfaces and photographed them. As a result human presence as trace through aftermath also touches upon issues of phenomenological sentience, though in this instance as a form of a suggestive absent presence." Within the subsequent On- and B/W Series the artist uses the acquired images and repeatedly displays them on the electronic devises. Carefully re-photographed using different light sources and various techniques of the photographic medium, "[…] the extended length of these series manifests a valorization and diversity of expression realized through the various uses of mark and gesture."

"The images of the artist Elias Wessel form a highly personal and polyvisual sense of photography as a cultural practice […] From the earliest period of this artist-photographer’s creative development there has been a psychological disposition towards the visual language of painting, and how that pictorial material idiom can be re-articulated and redirected by means of the photographic image." Born in Bonn, Germany the artist is based in New York City since 2008. His works are included in the AXA Art Collection in Cologne and have been exhibited at museums and institutions including the Museum of Contemporary Art – MOCA Taipei, Museum Heylshof and Museum Andreasstift Worms, the Goethe Institutes in Prague and Frankfurt am Main, Heinrich Hoffman Museum Frankfurt am Main and at the 1014 Fifth Avenue in cooperation with the German Consulate General, New York.
