Are you a choreographer, dancer, filmmaker or multi-media artist looking to expand your scope?
Joint Adventures is calling for submissions for the fifth Choreographic Captures Competition, which encourages artists to explore "new aesthetic approaches and visual languages for choreography and film" in a 60-second-long "ad format" film.
The project is also supported by the German Federal Cultural Foundation, but is open to artists from all over the world.
- "We are searching for works that operate choreographically with the film medium, react creatively towards movement, leave room for experimentation and initiate unusual aesthetic dialogues with the film audience: 'Expanded Choreography,'" explains the competition website.
- "The objective is to discover the endless choreographic possibilities within film - with, but also separated from the moving body in front of a camera, as well as in editing, rhythm, abstraction or animation."
In combining elements of choreography, movement, and film, competition organizers hope to expand the borders of each artistic field. Though the term "choreography" is most often used in reference to dance, here it should be interpreted more generally.
- "Almost everything is possible: form, content and aesthetics are given no limits, since choreography is an inexhaustible reservoir of movement in time and space," explains the competition site.
Art for those who didn't ask for it
The first Choreographic Captures Competition began with the motto "Art for those who didn't ask for it!" Though the audience of art shown in a museum or a gallery is an audience that has specifically sought out an artistic experience, the winning entries from Choreographic Captures will be shown at partner theaters between film ads. Though entries will have been shot in the form of a classic advertising clip - their intent is not to sell a product, but to make an artistic statement, or perhaps just to share a moment of beauty.
Competition organizers hope that these film clips, will, "through their artistic character embody a counter-program to the purely commercial intentions of advertising," says one description of the project on choreooo.org.
- If you would like to enter the 2012 Choreographic Captures Competition, visit the website and submit an entry form. The deadline for submissions is April 30th, 2012. Winners will be awarded during the Munich Filmfest, taking place from June 29 to July 7, 2012.
