Senator Tom Daschle and former German Secretary of Defense Volker Rühe were joined by foreign policy expert Helga Flores Trejo and Republican Party strategist Soren Dayton on May 29, 2012 to discuss the future of the transatlantic relationship. They approached this important question from different angles, ranging from US-European security cooperation to economic ties to a shared history of common values on both sides of the Atlantic.
In the end, there was a clear unanimous verdict affirming the importance of ongoing effective transatlantic cooperation and strong relations between Europe and the United States. As we move forward into the 21st century, with new global actors emerging on the international stage, Germany and Europe will continue to be the most important and reliable partners for the United States.
