Conducted online by the German Tourism Association (DTV), it determined that the dramatic gothic-style cathedral dominating the city's skyline along the Rhine River maintained as in previous years its No. 1 position.

It was followed by Dresden's Church of Our Lady, or Frauenkirche,  a striking Baroque church steeped in history. A second Dresden landmark, the Zwinger, a palace and landmark of German Baroque architecture, also made it into the Top 15 list, which was based on a poll of 1,600 respondents and administered by the DTV along with the German city portal meinestadt.de.

Other popular places of interest included the fairytale Neuschwanstein castle in the southern German state of Bavaria, an international tourism magnet which has been immortalized by Andy Warhol in one of his famous pop art multi-sequence portraits, as well as the bustling Hamburg harbor along the Elbe River and the mass transit suspension railway, or Schwebebahn, in the western German city of Wuppertal.

Three of the 15 must-see sights in Germany are moreover located in Berlin: The iconic Brandenburg Gate, the federal parliament Reichstag building, and  Germany's tallest structure - the Fernsehturm, or TV tower - should be on the itinerary of any Berlin tourist.
