Quelle provided Roth, who serves directly under Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, a close look at many aspects of Chicago’s political and social landscape.
In the morning, the two met with leaders of Jewish organizations in Chicago, including the Jewish United Fund/Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago, the American Jewish Committee, and the Chicago Board of Rabbis. They then headed to Lakeview for a meeting with Congressman Mike Quigley, representative of Illinos’ 5th District, to discuss the German-American relationship and the upcoming U.S. elections. Roth also got to experience the excitement around the 2016 pennant-winning Cubs: in anticipation of the first World Series game played at Wrigley Field since 1945, Rep. Quigley was decked out in his Cubs attire. Following the meeting, Roth visited the nearby German International School Chicago.
In the afternoon, Roth gave a lecture at the University of Illinois at Chicago, entitled “Transatlantic Challenges: A European Perspective.” (See below for the full text of the speech.) Roth’s visit to Chicago was part of a larger North American tour. It was preceded by stops in Ottawa and Toronto and followed by a trip to Minneapolis, where Roth delivered the keynote speech at the opening of the exhibition “Martin Luther: Art and the Reformation,” at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
