Federal Foreign Office Supports Peacebuilding in Sudan
On Wednesday, November 30, Mary McDonnell, Executive Director of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) and Consul General Horst Freitag signed an allocation agreement at the SSRC headquarters in Brooklyn. The agreement provides funding from the German Federal government for the SSRC through 2011.
The allocated funds will enable the SSRC to support the African Union High-Level Implementation Panel (AUHIP) in promoting the process of peace building in Sudan. The main focus is on sustainable conflict resolution, development of civil society, and democracy assistance.
The AUHIP was established by the African Union in 2009 and is chaired by former South African President Thabo Mbeki. Its mandate is to address all aspects of the political challenges facing Sudan, including the negotiation process to conclude the Post-Referendum Arrangements.
The assistance provided to Sudan to ease its way out of the crisis towards democracy is a priority in the foreign policy of the German Federal Government.
