Directed by Hans-Christian Schmid, this psychological thriller is set in a small-town in southern Germany in the 1970s. In spite of her continued battle with epilepsy, Michaela, played by Sandra Hueller, desperately wants to leave home to attend university. Once there, she experiences her first taste of freedom, a budding love for Stefan, and the joys of friendship with Hanna. After suffering a breakdown, however, Michaela seeks help from a priest who reinforces her fear that she is possessed. Though Stefan and Hanna encourage her to seek psychiatric help, they are unable to break the ties binding Michaela to her deeply religious family.

Sandra Hüller received multiple awards, including a Silver Bear and the 2006 German Film Award for Best Actress as well as the 2005 Bavarian Film Award for Best Newcomer Actress. Among other distinctions, the film received awards for Silver Best Film, Best Supporting Actress, Best Costume Design, and Best Sound Design at the 2006 German Film Awards and the 2006 FIPRESCI Award in Berlin.
