Playwright Schimmelpfennig and German & US Critics Discuss Contemporary Theater

Washington-area journalists, theater professionals and theater fans had the opportunity to hear from Roland Schimmelpfennig, one of Germany's most respected and often-produced playwrights, when the German Embassy, in conjunction with the Goethe-Institut and The Studio Theatre, welcomed him and a group of acclaimed German and American theater critics for a dialogue on November 7, at the Goethe-Institut in Washington, DC. Schimmelpfennig and theater critics Peter Kümmel of Die Zeit, Peter Michalzik of the Frankfurter Rundschau, Randy Gener of American Theater, and director Serge Seiden talked about contemporary theater in Germany and the US.

Schimmelpfennig calls watching his play, "The Golden Dragon," mounted on the US stage fascinating. "The way they did the play here is so intense and so playful and so intelligent and so American. It makes me very happy that it works, that the play can travel."
