Frankfurt Airport is gaining in prominence as a travel center with impressively rising numbers. Some 5.4 million passengers traveled through in June alone, according to airport operator Fraport. The heavy traffic month signaled a 5.4-percent climb in comparison with June of last year. So far in 2012, the airport has also recorded the highest passenger volume in its history: 27.4 million travelers have either flown in our out of the airport since the start of the year.
Freight tonnage in June has, however, dropped to 180,110 metric tons, a 3.4 percent drop in comparison with the same month last year. Fraport sees this contraction as a response to the uncertain business climate, to the European sovereign-debt crisis and to the recently imposed night flying restrictions in Frankfurt.
